HUMAN RIGHTS FILM: JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG

A screening of the film "Judgment at Nuremberg" on Wednesday October 19 at 7 pm in room 107, Franklin Patterson Hall will be offered by SS106T Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, the Law Program and the Office of Multicultural Education. Refreshments provided.

The 1961 film is a Hollywood fictionalization, complete with some of the biggest movie stars of the day (Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, William Shatner, Richard Widmark) of the work of the International Military Tribunal in bringing to justice the surviving leaders of Nazi Germany at the end of World War II, and so should not be read as a documentary. However, it does compellingly dramatize many of the most critical aspects of the Tribunal's theoretical underpinnings and its socio-political context. It pioneered the use of archival documentary footage within a fictional film, including horrific scenes filmed by Allied soldiers during their liberation of the German concentration and extermination camps in 1945. And the screenplay and acting are really superb.

The Nuremberg tribunal, despite its many flaws and limitations over which legal scholars continue to argue today, is generally considered the foundation of contemporary international criminal law and firmly established that those responsible for mass crimes against humanity should neither go unpunished nor be subjected to extralegal vengeance.

Please join us to view this important historical film.

Thank you for a successful Family & Friends Weekend!

To the Campus Community,

Thank you for participating in this year's Family & Friends Weekend and Inaugural Celebration. Your presence made the weekend a true success!

Despite the challenges of wet and windy weather guests and community members enjoyed lively panel discussions, wonderful food, OPRA activities, a fall farm festival, exceptional dance and theater performances, and a with the help of some late-breaking sunshine a breath-taking fall foliage display that makes the valley one of the most beautiful areas in New England.

I'd like to add a special word of thanks to all the folks who rolled up their sleeves and went the extra mile to make the weekend so special. Your interaction with our guests helped to demonstrate what makes Hampshire College so special.

Once everyone has had some time to settle down and reflect on the weekend's events, I would like to ask you to share your thoughts and suggestions for next year's Family & Friends Weekend. Please feel free to forward your ideas to llitterer@hampshire.edu

As always, we would like to keep Family & Friends Weekend as inclusive as possible. Planning for this event begins as early as March. If you would like to be involved with next year's Family & Friends Weekend, I encourage you to contact the alumni relations office by or before April 30, 2006.

Once again, thank you to everyone for making this year's Family & Friends Weekend and Inaugural Celebration such a success!

Best Always,
Laura Litterer

INSIDER INFO ON GRADUATE ADMISSIONS AT UC BERKELEY

INSIDER INFO ON GRADUATE ADMISSIONS AT UC BERKELEY
Wednesday, Oct. 19, 4-5:30 p.m., Googie Withers Room, 3rd Floor Library

Josephine Moreno, PH.D., Graduate Diversity Coordinator for the School of Arts and Humanities, and a colleague of Ralph Hexter's, is presenting this workshop. Her focus is on diversity students who are considering graduate studies at UC Berkeley, School of Humanities and Arts or School of Social Sciences. All students are welcome to attend.

Dr. Moreno sits on the admissions review panel for the School of Arts and Humanities, and works closely with the School of Social Sciences. She will discuss what the admissions committees look for as they read applications and how you can improve your chances of being selected. This can include the application itself for Div. III's, as well as classes and other prep that would be applicable to a Div I or Div II student.

---------
Greetings!

I am Dr. Josephine Moreno, the Graduate Diversity Coordinator for the Arts & Humanities in the College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Berkeley. I work with prospective and continuing diversity graduate students. Prospective diversity students and I often discuss graduate school preparation, admission criteria, the admission process, and university and external funding. Continuing students are typically concerned about funding, academic issues, completing their degrees, and
personal matters.

Prospective graduate students may be interested in STEP by Step (link), an advising tool for Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences students. Although it was developed for Berkeley students, it includes valuable information for all students interested in graduate studies at Berkeley and students who desire to enrich their undergraduate experience.
_______

This program has been arranged at the request of President Ralph Hexter and is being coordinated by UC Berkeley and CORC with help from the LeBron-Wiggins-Pran Cultural Center, Office of Multicultural Education, and Hampshire Schools of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, Interdisciplinary Arts, Social Science, Natural Science, and Cognitive Science.
